THE OCEAN ADVENTURE
Wonder Is Waiting Beneath the Surface
The ocean is filled with fascinating animals, changing habitats, powerful movement, remarkable landforms, and important connections to life around the world.
Throughout this adventure, children are encouraged to investigate questions, create, move, imagine, solve problems, explore their surroundings, and share meaningful experiences with their families.
Explorers may discover:
• Ocean animals and their habitats
• Waves, tides, currents, and the water cycle
• Islands, beaches, reefs, and underwater landforms
• The relationship between oceans, weather, and life on Earth
• Ways people explore, enjoy, and care for water environments
• How curiosity can lead to new questions and discoveries
Children do not need to complete every activity. Families can choose the experiences that fit their child’s interests, abilities, schedule, and available resources.

More Than a Workbook

Activities can be adapted, simplified, expanded, paused, or revisited. The book provides a path to follow without requiring every Explorer to travel it in exactly the same way.
FOUR MISSIONS, MANY WAYS TO EXPLORE
Follow Curiosity from One Discovery to the Next
The Ocean Adventure is organized into four missions. Each mission brings together different ways of learning so children can investigate a theme through experiences that feel meaningful to them.
Each mission may include:

Explore new ideas, ask questions, observe closely, read, investigate, and connect information to the world around you.

Draw, paint, build, design, write, imagine, or make something inspired by the mission.

Use games, movement, conversation, dramatic play, or shared challenges to experience the theme in an active way.

Continue learning through an outing, household experience, community visit, nature exploration, or meaningful activity completed together.

Preserve a memory, record a discovery, celebrate a proud moment, or consider what you would like to explore next.
Families may complete the missions in order, select activities based on interest, or return to favorite experiences throughout the year.
LEARNING THROUGH THE ADVENTURE
One Experience Can Support Many Areas of Growth
Ocean exploration naturally creates opportunities for children to build knowledge, practice skills, express ideas, and connect learning across different areas.
The Ocean Adventure may support:

These areas are not grades or requirements. They help families recognize the many kinds of learning that can grow from one meaningful adventure.
THE OCEAN EXPLORER PASSPORT
The Ocean Explorer Passport gives each child a personal place to preserve the experiences, discoveries, and memories that make their journey unique.
Explorers may use their Passport to:
Collect Ocean, club, and adventure stamps
Add themed stickers
Draw pictures or attach photographs
Record places they visited
Preserve tickets and small keepsakes
Share something they discovered
Remember a challenge they worked through
Celebrate a brave, kind, curious, or responsible choice
Record favorite moments and proud achievements
Choose what they would like to explore next
A Passport entry can be a drawing, photograph, sticker, stamp, dictated memory, short sentence, keepsake, or conversation preserved by an adult.
There is no single correct way to complete an Explorer Passport. Over time, it becomes a one-of-a-kind record of the child’s interests, experiences, discoveries, and growth.

The Adventure Book provides the experiences, the Passport preserves the child’s journey, the stickers help personalize and celebrate meaningful moments, and the Founding Explorer patch recognizes participation in Brightwood’s earliest adventures.
Packet contents and availability may change as Brightwood’s pilot materials are tested and thoughtfully refined.
MADE FOR DIFFERENT EXPLORERS
There Is More Than One Way to Participate
Children bring different interests, abilities, communication styles, energy levels, experiences, and support needs to every adventure.
An Explorer may:
• Complete an activity independently
• Work beside a parent, caregiver, sibling, or friend
• Respond through art, movement, building, speech, or writing
• Observe before choosing to participate
• Use adapted tools, sensory supports, or additional guidance
• Complete a shorter version of an activity
• Explore a subject more deeply
• Skip an experience that does not feel appropriate
• Return to a favorite activity more than once
Younger children may participate through conversation, play, movement, drawing, observation, and adult-recorded responses. Older children may add research, detailed writing, independent projects, presentations, or deeper investigations.
Brightwood does not expect every child to produce the same result. Participation should reflect the individual Explorer—not comparison, pressure, or perfect work.
PART OF THE BRIGHTWOOD PILOT
Growing Thoughtfully, One Adventure at a Time
The Ocean & Water Adventure is Brightwood’s first completed Adventure Book and part of the developing Brightwood pilot experience.
During the pilot stage, materials may be reviewed and refined using observations and thoughtful feedback from participating families.
Brightwood Adventure Books are educational resources for family-directed exploration. They are not a school enrollment program, supervised class, childcare service, therapy program, field-trip provider, or substitute for professional educational, medical, developmental, or safety guidance.
Families choose which experiences are appropriate for their children and are responsible for supervision, transportation, admission costs, materials, accessibility supports, water safety, and the rules of any activity, provider, or location they visit.
Product availability, packet contents, prices, and purchasing options will be shared through the Brightwood Shop as they become available.
